As of this morning, I’ve had peach yogurt and a strawberry poptart. and a workout.
As of yesterday, I’m learning how to clip in and out of my bike. It’s kind of a big deal. I have special shoes with special cleats that clip into special pedals. It can get expensive. Happy Birthday to me.
And as of right now, my birthday request is to go to Brick 29 this evening.
And then cake.
Growing up, my family had some standard birthday traditions:
#1) The birthday boy/girl gets to pick the cake and dinner that day. I always chose pizza. And rainbow chip cake.
#2) The birthday boy/girl wakes up to a pillow fight. Everyone in the family sneaks into the birthday kid’s room and wake them up by throwing pillows (they try and be quiet and the birthday kid pretends to be asleep). It’s one way to make them feel special and acknowledge from the moment they wake up that this is their day.
#3) When a kid turns 1, they get their own birthday cake. My first birthday cake experience (somehow my brother got the home video and posted it as a mother’s day surprise for our mom).
#4) If you’re a girl, and you turned 12, you have the option of getting your ears pierced. I don’t remember what the boys in my family got to do.
#5) When you turn 8, you get to throw a birthday party for 8 friends. I had a “Swan Princess” theme. We made tiaras.
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for not stopping after child #10. Thank you for making birthdays so special and for calling every year to sing to me.
